China, Australia among nations to send aid to Sri Lanka
The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka announced $100,000 in emergency aid, while Nepal committed $200,000 to support relief and recovery operations in affected regions, local media reported. Australia has contributed AUD 1 million ($650,000) for immediate response and recovery, and India dispatched teams of 80 personnel along with aid to assist those impacted.
So far, 334 people have died and 370 remain missing due to the floods, which have caused landslides and widespread destruction since severe weather struck on Nov. 17. Search and rescue efforts continue across multiple affected areas.
Cyclone Ditwah, which hit Sri Lanka last Wednesday, has impacted approximately 1.12 million people from over 309,000 families. Authorities have established 1,275 relief centers, providing shelter to 180,499 displaced individuals.
The military is conducting both aerial and ground operations to evacuate those trapped, while relief teams work to distribute essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid. During these operations, a Sri Lankan Air Force helicopter crashed on Sunday; all crew members were rescued and hospitalized.
In response to the disaster, the government has suspended academic activities at universities, higher education institutions, and vocational training centers until Dec. 8. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency on Saturday to facilitate coordinated relief efforts.
